Importing a Jeep Wrangler to the UK
Four generations since 1987. None is over 40 years old yet, though the first is close.
What we know about the Jeep Wrangler
- Generations
- 4 generations, from 1987 to today. The Wrangler replaced the CJ, a separate nameplate not covered here.
- Body styles
- Two-door (soft or hard top) and four-door, depending on the generation.
- Over 40 in 2026
- None that we know of in 2026. Sources put the first YJ in early 1986, so we go by the build date on the paperwork.
- Needs IVA
- JL (IVA). JK (IVA or MOT, by build date).
Which test, by age
The year of the individual car decides the test, not the badge. Each bar is a generation. The dashed lines mark a build date before 1986 (the 2026 vehicle tax cut-off for the 40-year exemptions) and 2016 (the 10-year line between needing approval and not).
- Over 10 years old
- Either side of 10 years
- Under 10 years old
- YJ 1987-1995
YJ: 1987-1995, over 10 years old.
2-door, soft or hard top. Sources put the first YJ in early 1986. We go by the build date on the paperwork. Over 10 years old, so it usually needs no approval. It takes an MOT.
- TJ 1997-2006
TJ: 1997-2006, over 10 years old.
2-door, 4-door Unlimited from 2004. Over 10 years old, so it usually needs no approval. It takes an MOT.
- JK 2007-2018
JK: 2007-2018, either side of 10 years.
2-door, 4-door. Sits on the 10-year line. Older examples take an MOT, newer ones need an IVA. The build date decides, so we read it off the paperwork first.
- JL 2018-present
JL: 2018-present, under 10 years old.
2-door, 4-door, plug-in hybrid 4xe. Under 10 years old, so it needs an IVA before registration.
Written for 2026. Both lines roll forward each year, so more cars come into range as they age. The 40-year exemptions also need the vehicle to be unchanged.
What to check before you buy
-
The title and the build date
DVLA wants the original US registration certificate to show when the car was made, and keeps it. The 10-year and 40-year tests run on the individual car, so read the build date off the title, not the advert.
-
Changes to the car
Wranglers get modified. The 40-year exemptions need the car unchanged, and a substantial change to the chassis, axles or engine within the last 30 years counts against it.
-
Lighting
The usual US work is headlights that dip the right way for UK roads, amber indicators, a rear fog lamp and side repeaters. Newer cars cost more to convert than older ones.
-
A clean title
We import clean-title vehicles only. A salvage or rebuilt brand on the title is a reason to walk away.
The test follows the car's own date, not its generation. gov.uk, vehicle approval and historic vehicles
What usually needs doing
The route is the same for every model. The lighting and approval stops are where the Jeep Wrangler differs.

Common questions
Does a Wrangler need an IVA to be registered in the UK?
It depends on the age of the car, not the badge. Under 10 years old means an IVA. A car over 10 years old usually needs no approval to be registered. The JL is an IVA car and the JK straddles the line. The YJ and TJ are over 10 years old.
Why is no Wrangler over 40 years old?
The YJ is the oldest Wrangler, and sources put the first one in early 1986. The vehicle tax cut-off for 2026 is built before 1 January 1986, so we go by the build date on the paperwork. That cut-off rolls forward each year, so YJs come into range later.
What about the older Jeep CJ?
The Wrangler replaced the CJ, which is a separate nameplate. Many CJs are over 40 years old. This page does not cover them, but a quote does.
Do I need left-hand-drive paperwork?
No separate approval route applies for left-hand drive on a US vehicle. The DVLA form asks you to tick left or right hand drive, and the age of the vehicle sets the test.
