Importing an American pickup truck

F-150s and Raptors, RAMs, Silverados and Sierras — including duallys. Full-size American trucks come through our workshop and go through our own IVA lane.

What to know before you buy

Classification comes first

Depending on its configuration, a pickup can be classed as a passenger vehicle or as a goods vehicle, and that affects how it is tested and taxed. We confirm the classification for your specific truck before you commit, rather than assuming.

Tested in our own IVA lane

Imported pickups go up on the four-post lifts in our IVA test lane for the underbody checks, so the approval timetable is ours rather than a queue for an external slot.

Lighting, as with any US vehicle

Headlight beam pattern, a rear fog lamp and side repeaters are the changes that come up most. Trucks with integrated lighting units tend to cost more to convert.

Size matters for shipping

A full-size crew-cab or a dually is a big vehicle. Tell us the exact model and cab and bed configuration when you ask for a quote so the shipping is priced for what it actually is.

Tax and approval at a glance

Duty and VAT
Coming from the USA, import duty is charged first at 10% of the vehicle value, then VAT at 20% on the value plus shipping plus that duty. See the worked example.
Approval route
Usually IVA if under ten years old, MOT if over — but confirm the classification first, because it affects the route. How approval works.

Common questions

Can I import a RAM or F-150 to the UK?

Yes. Full-size American pickups are imported and registered in the UK. They go through approval and registration like any other import, and we confirm how your specific truck is classified before you commit.

Do American pickups need modifications for the UK?

Usually lighting — headlight beam pattern, a rear fog lamp and side repeaters. The speedometer already reads in miles per hour. Newer trucks with integrated lighting units tend to cost more to convert.

Found the right truck?

Send us the vehicle and where it is. You get an itemised landed cost — shipping, duty, VAT, approval and registration — usually the same working day.
