Importing an American muscle car

Mustangs, Challengers, Chargers, Camaros and Corvettes — modern or classic. The approval route and the tax both depend on the year, so that is the first thing we look at.

What to know before you buy

Modern or classic changes everything

A muscle car under ten years old needs IVA; one over ten needs an MOT instead. A car over 30 years old in original specification may qualify as a historic vehicle: no import duty, and import VAT at an effective 5% instead of 20%. The same badge can be a very different import depending on the year.

Lighting is the usual work

US headlights are aimed differently, and UK requirements add a rear fog lamp and side repeaters. Newer cars with integrated lighting units tend to cost more to convert than older ones with separate lamps.

The speedometer is already in mph

One conversion that catches out European and Japanese imports does not apply — American cars already read in miles per hour.

Left-hand drive is legal

There is no requirement to convert to right-hand drive. A left-hand drive car registers and drives in the UK like any other.

Tax and approval at a glance

Duty and VAT
Coming from the USA, import duty is charged first at 10% of the vehicle value, then VAT at 20% on the value plus shipping plus that duty. See the worked example.
Approval route
Under ten years old: IVA. Over ten: MOT. We carry out the IVA in our own test lane. How approval works.

Common questions

Do I have to convert a Mustang or Challenger to right-hand drive?

No. Left-hand drive vehicles are legal to register and drive in the UK, so there is no conversion requirement. The car still needs the lighting changes the approval test calls for.

Is a classic Mustang cheaper to import than a new one?

Often, yes. A vehicle over ten years old takes the MOT route rather than IVA, and one over 30 years old in original specification may qualify as a historic vehicle: no import duty, and import VAT at an effective 5% instead of 20%. Heavy modification can rule that out, so it is checked vehicle by vehicle.

Found the right muscle car?

Send us the vehicle and where it is. You get an itemised landed cost — shipping, duty, VAT, approval and registration — usually the same working day.
